Exporting Pets Living in the United Kingdom

All dogs, cats and ferrets leaving the UK must certanly be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies (in that order) and wait 21 days before leaving the country. It’s also wise to ask your veterinarian for an EU Pet Passport if you want to go back to the UK.

If you’re likely to take your pet on a trip to a country with a top incidence of rabies, your veterinarian should administer a Blood Titer Test when you leave the nation if you want to go back to the EU. You don’t have to attend 90 days before traveling if your pet has an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in your pet passport.

You do not have to hold back 3 months if your pet comes with an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in the pet passport.

There may however be additional charges payable at the airport of destination to cover costs for such items as airline import handling, customs clearance and veterinary charges. As these fees are payable in country of destination, and we’re unable to pay them in your behalf, so these charges are not within the quote (but we shall advise you of this).

Prices are dependent on the size/weight of the animal(s) to be exported, any extra services (such as UK transportation, kenneling, and veterinary certification), flight time and the destination. In the case of dogs, the box size provided is on the basis of the measurements fond of us. Should these measurements be incorrect we accept no responsibility for any delay or extra costs involved as a result.

Animals must be shipped in containers created to IATA specifications which are the correct size for them i.e. they should be large enough for the pet to stand up without touching the the surface of the box, lie down comfortably and manage to turn round within the box. There must be considered a fixed water container inside the container with a method of filling it from the surface (funnel).

In case you need to utilise our services we will have to have written confirmation with payment the moment possible and at the very least 28 days beforehand. We may also demand a contact Name, Address and Telephone Number in the country of destination (the airline will have to ring beforehand to confirm acceptance).

You may well be in a position to take your pet as excess baggage, which will mean booking direct with passenger reservations. This is sometimes a cheaper option (please remember that some airlines cannot take livestock and that there could be restrictions such as for instance standby status depending on the airline and the route). However should the animal(s) be a particularly large shipment (in Airline terms) or coping with the animal(s) at the same time because the move be particularly difficult then we could offer the cargo option along with other services including collection, kenneling and Export Health Certification.

With info on the measurements of the animal(s) we can build transit kennels to fit. Kennels may be either found from us or sent to any U.K. Airport to coincide together with your check in time or be delivered to your home.

Whatever the mode of travel, pets will go to the cargo your hands on the aircraft. This really is heated and pressurised to exactly the same extent whilst the passenger cabin. The animals are loaded to the hold approximately around 30 minutes before departure (however the airline requires that they’re delivered in their mind 4 hours prior to the flight) and are unloaded at the other end usually within around 30 minutes of the plane landing. When the documents are available the animals can be cleared through customs. The handling/vet fees are then payable to the Import Shed Operator at which point the animals may be collected and taken home.

Taking your pet on your own flight

Pets can travel of all scheduled flights from Heathrow and Gatwick to nearly every the main world so generally, your pet should be able to travel for a passing fancy flight as yourself if this is what you would like. All the ‘low-cost’airlines don’t carry pets however, and there are few points that should be considered with this sort of pet shipment.

Firstly, pets arrive into the cargo or freight element of the airport, not the passenger terminal and you can’t be in two places simultaneously! If you’re held up attending to your personal customs and visa formalities, your pet may be left looking forward to more than required to be collected and released from their travel kennel.

Also, it’s worth bearing in your mind that many airports require you to take your pets travel kennel away with you. In case of large or multiple pets, the travel kennel/s may prove very difficult to transport, especially if you have all your personal luggage to cope with too.

Lastly, you’ll have no use of your pet from the full time they’re checked in at the departure airport and soon you collect them at the destination airport, and for many countries such as Australia and New Zealand where quarantine on landing is applicable, you will not have the ability to see your pets before they’re taken to their quarantine accommodation.

If you’ve considered these points and still want your pet traveling on the same flight as yourself, we’ll interact with you to support this whenever possible.

We’re happy to meet clients who’re travelling on a single aircraft as their pets at the London airports on your day of shipment. We would require seeing copies most of Veterinary paperwork to make sure they’re appropriate for travel and whilst we will always ask you to check and double check how big is your pet and travel kennel in advance, we unfortunately cannot accept any responsibility for last-minute delays or problems occurred on your day of travel with this sort of shipment. The single most common reason behind these last second problems at the airport may be the measurements being incorrect and the travel kennel being refused as too small for the dog. With the years of experience we’ve with such issues, we shall sometimes ask you often times if you should be sure about the size as a wriggly dog is not exactly an easy task to measure and we could usually tell if the measurements don’t sound right for the breed of dog.

Many pets which have previously travelled in to the UK in a certain size kennel might not manage to travel back out in the exact same kennel because of the stringent rules applied when leaving the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are between the strictest on the planet for animal welfare, and therefore the message listed here is that if you should be uncertain please say so as we will then make contingency plans for if the kennel is not just a good enough fit.

Pet export

There’s no making your way around it – taking your pet travelling by air beyond your UK, whether on a brief holiday or even more permanently, is expensive, time-consuming and may be complicated.

There are a host of regulations which have to be followed, both country and airline specific, and they quite often change.

Generally, the farther away or maybe more exotic your destination, the more work is necessary to meet import regulations, veterinary requirements and to navigate through the area rules.

Our job at Pets by Plane is to assist you find the right flights (many airlines will not carry snub-nosed breeds of dogs and cats) navigate the guidelines and regulations, advise on the proper travel kennel and ensure that your pet can travel comfortably, securely and as economically as possible.

With over 25 year’s experience in transporting animals around the globe, we’ll ensure everything can be as stress free as you possibly can and we can make the calm well-being, comfort and safety of your pet our top priority. We take our motto of’We care in the air’extremely seriously and pride ourselves on giving a passionate, efficient and caring service.

Pet Shipping Advice

All pet dogs and cats should be microchipped ahead of international travel, so ensuring this is done will be the first faltering step in preparing your pets for travel. The other veterinary requirements vary immensely between every country, so please check the relevant page on our website or contact us for more in-depth information.

Most owners are very anxious about sending their pets on a trip, and that is, of course, totally understandable. However, 4 million domestic pets fly annually throughout the world and the risks of airline travel for them are the identical as an individual of the equivalent health status. The scare-mongering articles which can be on the internet listing death and injury as common occurrences for air travel more often than not occur once the rules for airline travel are flouted, such as animals being cramped into inappropriately sized travel kennels and not given the rigorous medical examinations which are required just before airline journeys. The UK has strict welfare regulations governing international pet travel and animals would never be permitted to depart from any UK Airport in an unsuitable travel kennel or in ill health.

Pets should not go arrive at any destination over a week-end or Bank Holiday because at most airports abroad there are no cargo handling arrangements during today and/or Customs clearance where applicable. If they are allowed to reach at weekends it always incurs one more fees and possible delays in collecting your pet, so it’s always best to send for a weekday arrival. You will find exceptions to this so please contact our office for more information if that is something you require.

When taking your pet to a foreign country, please ensure they’re only given water that is safe for humans to drink, we’d strongly advise bottled water if you are in any doubt whatsoever. UK born animals will not have the natural immunity of native pets in your country, therefore it is imperative they’re quite well protected with broad spectrum parasite treatments, to lessen the danger of serious illnesses transmitting to your pet. It can be advisable to make sure that all their routine vaccinations are updated because it is prudent to give them as much disease immunity as possible.

Pets are more adaptable than they are often given credit for, and with some common-sense precautions regarding changes in climate, natural dangers, standard of veterinary care and relevant laws in your country, there’s no reasons why pets cannot settle well into your brand-new life abroad together.

Pet Microchip

The first step to prepare your dog, cat or ferret to enter the United Kingdom is to have your pet microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15 digit pet microchip.

If your pet currently includes a microchip that’s not ISO 11784/11785 compliant, then you have 3 choices:

You may bring your own personal microchip scanner.
You are able to contact the officials at the Border Inspection Post where you will enter the UK and inquire regarding whether they have scanners that could read your pet’s chip.
If your pet’s current microchip can still be read, your veterinarian can implant compliant chip. The amount and implant dates of both microchips must be documented on the EU Health Certificate (see step #5).

A tattoo is a satisfactory kind of identification as long as it was presented with prior to July 3, 2011, is obviously visible and your pet was vaccinated for rabies following the tattoo was applied.

Rabies Vaccination

All dogs, cats and ferrets will need to have proof of a current rabies vaccination administered after a microchip was implanted to enter the United Kingdom.

The very first rabies vaccination after the microchip is implanted is called the principal vaccination and it should be a 12 months vaccine. If your pet’s previous vaccination had expired before being revaccinated, the next vaccination becomes the principal vaccination and in addition it must be a 12 months vaccine.

All vaccinations that are administered after the principal vaccination are called booster vaccinations.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from the rabies-free (click here) or rabies-controlled country (click here), the principal rabies vaccination should be administered no sooner than 21 days before entering the United Kingdom.

There’s no waiting period after booster vaccinations so long as:

the last vaccination was administered after having a microchip was implanted AND
the last vaccination hadn’t expired when the booster was given.

The United Kingdom does honor the 3 year rabies vaccination for dogs, cats and ferrets; however, it should only be administered as a booster, never as a primary vaccination. You can speak to your veterinarian about this.

Once your pet has entered the United Kingdom, a 21 day waiting period isn’t required for subsequent visits, provided rabies boosters are kept up to date, and one other entry requirements are met.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from the high-rabies country, it must watch for at the least 30 days after vaccination before finding a rabies titer test (see step #3).

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

PETS is made to halt the spread of rabies and other diseases while still allowing pets to travel.

Northern Ireland has been free from rabies for many years, however in some other countries there’s still a risk of the illness to mammals. The largest risk for rabies entering here will be via an infected animal smuggled in illegally.

All rabies-susceptible animals entering the UK are normally required to spend four months in quarantine, unless they arrive under and meet most of the conditions of PETS.

All pet dogs (including assistance dogs), cats and ferrets can enter or re-enter the UK without quarantine under PETS provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which differ depending on the country your pet is travelling from.

They might then have the ability to get early release if they can be shown to meet the required pet travel requirements.

Countries participating in PETS include most areas of Europe and many non-European destinations.
