Importing Pets

The Pet Travel Scheme is a UK Government scheme that allows pet cats and dogs to enter the U.K. without spending time in quarantine.

In order to comply with one of these rules you will have to do the next (In Order).
1)
Check the rules applicable to your pet on the https://www.gov.uk/bringing-food-animals-plants-into-uk site and make your plans accordingly.
2)
Have your animal fitted with a microchip.
3)
Have your pet vaccinated against rabies.
4)
For qualifying countries, after a period of 21 days following your pet’s vaccination, your pet may then go the UK.
5)
If you have any evidence that the pet is fit and healthy (like a letter from the vet stating that your pet has been recently examined and what the findings were), then this could be helpful.
6)
Between 1 and 5 days before the date of departure your dog (this doesn’t apply to cats or ferrets) must be treated against tapeworm. You must have this treatment completed by way of a vet and ensure they issue you with a certificate to this effect/stamp your pet’s passport.
7)
Please be aware that you will find different rules applicable determined by where your pet has travelled from. If your pet can easily be identified (because thet have already been fitted with a pet passport microchip) then importation is likely to be much easier. Always try and travel together with your pet so that you are available to answer any questions because they arise.

There are other considerations you will have to take into consideration before bringing your pet back into the U.K. for instance the route that the pet travels must certanly be approved by DEFRA. The airline that you use must certanly be an accepted carrier and the united states that you’re flying from needs to become a qualifying country.

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

PETS is designed to halt the spread of rabies and other diseases while still allowing pets to travel.

Northern Ireland has been free from rabies for quite some time, in some other countries there’s still a risk of the disease to mammals. The greatest risk for rabies entering here would be through an infected animal smuggled in illegally.

All rabies-susceptible animals entering the UK are normally required to invest four months in quarantine, unless they arrive under and meet all of the conditions of PETS.

All pet dogs (including assistance dogs), cats and ferrets can enter or re-enter the UK without quarantine under PETS provided they meet the guidelines of the scheme, which differ depending on the country the pet is travelling from.

They might then manage to get early release if they may be shown to generally meet the mandatory pet travel requirements.

Countries participating in PETS include most elements of Europe and many non-European destinations.

Transporting your dog to USA

Relocate your puppy to USA by having an IPATA registered and approved USA dog shipper such as for example Airsupply shippping (passportforpets.co.uk). You know your pet utilizes you to help make the best decisions about their welfare and we follow the strict operating code laid down by IPATA. These rules are designed to ensure that your dog isn’t unduly stressed by the travel and they arrive in the US in good condition. However, we’ve been shipping dogs to the USA for over 40 years and we actually rise above IPATA guidelines because we want both happy pets AND owners! Our pet shipping business continues to expand and we can only achieve this through happy customers who recommend our services to others.
The good news about shipping your dog to the USA from the Rabies free country or Rabies controlled Country just like the UK is that there is no quarantine requirement provided that your pet has been in the UK for 6 months or more. However, your dog will have to have documented evidence to be vaccinated against rabies otherwise this will lead to entry delays because you is going to be asked to sign a Confinement Agreement (this basically says that you will get your pet vaccinated and then confine them for no less than 30 days after treatment). If you are importing a puppy that is too young (usually under 6 months of age) to own had the rabies vaccination you then will need a Confinement Agreement, see: USA CDC Dog Confinement Agreements for more details. Whilst the CDC (US authority on pet imports) does not require your pet to really have a certificate of overall health MOST AIRLINES DO REQUIRE THIS before they’ll alow your pet to board an aircraft.

Generally, all dogs should be imported or exported through one of many

IATA Approved Flight Kennels

All dogs shipped by air must certanly be housed in an IATA approved kennel which is ideal for how big your dog being transported. Food and water must also be contained in the kennel for long journeys and some airlines do exercise any dogs being shipped in the hold on significant stop-overs however for security reasons, this is not something that you (if you are travelling on the same aircraft) could be allowed to do yourself.

Pet Microchip

The first step to prepare your dog, cat or ferret to enter the United Kingdom is to possess your pet microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15 digit pet microchip.

If your pet currently has a microchip that is not ISO 11784/11785 compliant, then you have 3 choices:

You may bring your own microchip scanner.
You can contact the officials at the Border Inspection Post where you will enter the UK and inquire concerning whether they’ve scanners that could read your pet’s chip.
If your pet’s current microchip can still be read, your veterinarian can implant compliant chip. The number and implant dates of both microchips should be documented on the EU Health Certificate (see step #5).

A tattoo is a satisfactory form of identification provided that it was given prior to July 3, 2011, is actually visible and your pet was vaccinated for rabies after the tattoo was applied.

Rabies Vaccination

All dogs, cats and ferrets will need to have proof of a current rabies vaccination administered following a microchip was implanted to enter the United Kingdom.

The first rabies vaccination after the microchip is implanted is known as the principal vaccination and it must be a twelve months vaccine. If your pet’s previous vaccination had expired before being revaccinated, another vaccination becomes the principal vaccination and additionally, it should be a twelve months vaccine.

All vaccinations which can be administered after the principal vaccination are called booster vaccinations.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from a rabies-free (click here) or rabies-controlled country (click here), the principal rabies vaccination must be administered no prior to 21 days before entering the United Kingdom.

There’s no waiting period after booster vaccinations as long as:

the previous vaccination was administered after having a microchip was implanted AND
the prior vaccination hadn’t expired once the booster was given.

The United Kingdom does honor the 3 year rabies vaccination for dogs, cats and ferrets; however, it should only be administered as an enhancement, never as a primary vaccination. You can get hold of your veterinarian about this.

Once your pet has entered the United Kingdom, a 21 day waiting period isn’t required for subsequent visits, provided rabies boosters are kept current, and one other entry requirements are met.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from the high-rabies country, it must await a minimum of 30 days after vaccination before getting a rabies titer test (see step #3).
