Importing Pets

The Pet Travel Scheme is really a UK Government scheme which allows pet cats and dogs to enter the U.K. without spending amount of time in quarantine.

To be able to comply with one of these rules you should do the next (In Order).
1)
Check the rules applicable to your pet on the https://www.gov.uk/bringing-food-animals-plants-into-uk site and make your plans accordingly.
2)
Have your animal fitted with a microchip.
3)
Have your pet vaccinated against rabies.
4)
For qualifying countries, after a period of 21 days following your pet’s vaccination, your pet may then travel to the UK.
5)
If you have any evidence your pet is fit and healthy (like a letter from a vet stating your pet has been examined and what the findings were), then this will be helpful.
6)
Between 1 and 5 days ahead of the date of departure your pet (this doesn’t apply to cats or ferrets) should be treated against tapeworm. You must have this treatment completed by a vet and ensure they issue you with a certificate to the effect/stamp your pet’s passport.
7)
Please know that you can find different rules applicable determined by where your pet has travelled from. If your pet can certainly be identified (because thet have now been fitted with a dog passport microchip) then importation will be much easier. Always try and travel along with your pet so that you are available to answer any questions while they arise.

There are other considerations you will need to take into account before bringing your pet back to the U.K. for example the route that your pet travels must certanly be approved by DEFRA. The airline that you utilize should be an accepted carrier and the nation that you will be flying from needs to become a qualifying country.

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

PETS is made to halt the spread of rabies and other diseases while still allowing pets to travel.

Northern Ireland has been free from rabies for many years, however in some other countries there is still a danger of the illness to mammals. The largest risk for rabies entering here will be through an infected animal smuggled in illegally.

All rabies-susceptible animals entering the UK are normally required to invest four months in quarantine, unless they arrive under and meet all of the conditions of PETS.

All pet dogs (including assistance dogs), cats and ferrets can enter or re-enter the UK without quarantine under PETS provided they meet the guidelines of the scheme, which differ with respect to the country your pet is travelling from.

They might then have the ability to get early release if they could be shown to generally meet the required pet travel requirements.

Countries participating in PETS include most parts of Europe and many non-European destinations.

Taking your pet in your flight

Pets can travel of all scheduled flights from Heathrow and Gatwick to nearly every area of the world so typically, your pet should manage to travel on the same flight as yourself if that is what you will like. A lot of the ‘low-cost’airlines don’t carry pets however, and you can find few points that should be considered with this kind of pet shipment.

Firstly, pets arrive in to the cargo or freight area of the airport, not the passenger terminal and you cannot take two places simultaneously! If you’re held up attending to your own personal customs and visa formalities, your pet might be left waiting for longer than required to be collected and released from their travel kennel.

Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that a lot of airports need you to take your pets travel kennel away with you. In the event of large or multiple pets, the travel kennel/s may prove very hard to move, particularly if you have all your own personal luggage to deal with too.

Lastly, you’ll have no access to your pet from the full time they’re checked in at the departure airport until you collect them at the destination airport, and for many countries such as for instance Australia and New Zealand where quarantine on landing is applicable, you won’t be able to see your pets before they’re taken to their quarantine accommodation.

If you’ve considered these points and still want your pet to visit for a passing fancy flight as yourself, we’ll interact with you to allow for this whenever possible.

We are happy to meet up clients that are travelling on a single aircraft as their pets at the London airports on your day of shipment. We would require seeing copies most of Veterinary paperwork to make sure they’re suitable for travel and whilst we shall always ask you to check and check how big your pet and travel kennel ahead of time, we unfortunately cannot accept any responsibility for last-minute delays or problems occurred on your day of travel with this type of shipment. The single most common basis for these last minute problems at the airport is the measurements being incorrect and the travel kennel being refused as too small for the dog. With the years of experience we’ve with these types of issues, we will sometimes ask you often times if you’re sure about the size as a wriggly dog is nearly an easy task to measure and we can usually tell if the measurements don’t sound right for the breed of dog.

Many pets which have previously travelled in to the UK in a certain size kennel may not be able to travel back out in the exact same kennel due to the stringent rules applied when leaving the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are amongst the strictest on earth for animal welfare, and and so the message listed here is that if you are unsure please say so even as we can then make contingency plans for if the kennel is not really a sufficient fit.

Pet Microchip

The first faltering step to prepare your dog, cat or ferret to enter the United Kingdom is to have your pet microchipped by having an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15 digit pet microchip.

If your pet currently includes a microchip that is not ISO 11784/11785 compliant, then you definitely have 3 choices:

You brings your own personal microchip scanner.
You are able to contact the officials at the Border Inspection Post where you’ll enter the UK and inquire concerning whether they have scanners that will read your pet’s chip.
If your pet’s current microchip can nevertheless be read, your veterinarian can implant compliant chip. The number and implant dates of both microchips must certanly be documented on the EU Health Certificate (see step #5).

A tattoo is a satisfactory form of identification so long as it was handed just before July 3, 2011, is obviously visible and your pet was vaccinated for rabies after the tattoo was applied.

Rabies Vaccination

All dogs, cats and ferrets will need to have proof of a current rabies vaccination administered following a microchip was implanted to enter the United Kingdom.

The first rabies vaccination after the microchip is implanted is known as the principal vaccination and it should be a 12 months vaccine. If your pet’s previous vaccination had expired before being revaccinated, another vaccination becomes the primary vaccination and in addition it must be a twelve months vaccine.

All vaccinations that are administered after the principal vaccination are called booster vaccinations.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from a rabies-free (click here) or rabies-controlled country (click here), the principal rabies vaccination should be administered no prior to 21 days before entering the United Kingdom.

There is no waiting period after booster vaccinations as long as:

the last vaccination was administered after having a microchip was implanted AND
the last vaccination had not expired once the booster was given.

The United Kingdom does honor the 3 year rabies vaccination for dogs, cats and ferrets; however, it will only be administered as an enhancement, much less a main vaccination. You can speak to your veterinarian about this.

Once your pet has entered the United Kingdom, a 21 day waiting period is not needed for subsequent visits, provided rabies boosters are kept current, and one other entry requirements are met.

If your pet is entering the United Kingdom from a high-rabies country, it must await no less than 30 days after vaccination before finding a rabies titer test (see step #3).

Exporting Pets Living in the United Kingdom

All dogs, cats and ferrets leaving the UK must certanly be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies (in that order) and wait 21 days before leaving the country. It’s also advisable to ask your veterinarian for an EU Pet Passport if you would like to return to the UK.

If you should be about to take your pet on a journey to a country with a higher incidence of rabies, your veterinarian should administer a Blood Titer Test when you leave the country if you wish to return to the EU. There isn’t to hold back 90 days before traveling if your pet has an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in your pet passport.

You don’t have to hold back 3 months if your pet posseses an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in the pet passport.

However, your puppy will need to have documented evidence of being vaccinated against rabies otherwise this may lead to entry delays because you will be asked to sign a Confinement Agreement (this basically says you will get your puppy vaccinated and then confine them for a minimum of 30 days after treatment). If you’re importing a puppy that is too young (usually under 6 months of age) to own had the rabies vaccination then you definitely will be needing a Confinement Agreement, see: USA CDC Dog Confinement Agreements for more details. Whilst the CDC (US authority on pet imports) doesn’t require your dog to truly have a certificate of overall health MOST AIRLINES DO REQUIRE THIS before they’ll alow your pet to board an aircraft.
