The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they comply with the regulations. Additionally, it allows pet owners in the UK to take their dogs, cats and ferrets to other European countries and then return using them without significance of quarantine. All relevant documents and information can be down loaded from this page and all latest info on the scheme can be found on the official DEFRA website.
For dogs, cats and ferrets entering the UK from any European or “listed” third country the key differences are that the current requirement to carry out a rabies blood test followed by a four-month wait before entry into the UK will no longer be required. Dogs, cats and pet ferrets entering the UK from an EU or ‘listed’third country from 1st January 2012 must: have these completed in this exact order:

Be microchipped
Vaccinated against rabies
Have waited 21 days after vaccination before entering the UK
Hold an EU Pet Passport or EU Veterinary Certificate (Annex 2)
Tapeworm Treatment(dogs only): before entering the UK, all pet dogs (including assistance dogs) must certanly be treated for tapeworm. The treatment should be administered by way of a vet not significantly less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK. There is no mandatory requirement for tick treatment. No treatment is necessary for dogs entering the UK from Finland, Ireland or Malta).

Pets entering from a non listed third country must pass a blood test 30 days after vaccination followed with a 3 month wait.

To prevent confusion we have prepared check lists for you to print out and take to your vet.

Transporting your dog to USA

Relocate your pet to USA with an IPATA registered and approved USA dog shipper such as for example Airsupply shippping (passportforpets.co.uk). You understand your puppy relies on you to make the best decisions about their welfare and we follow the strict operating code laid down by IPATA. These rules are made to ensure that your pet isn’t unduly stressed by the travel and that they arrive in the US in good condition. However, we have been shipping dogs to the USA for over 40 years and we actually exceed IPATA guidelines because we would like both happy pets AND owners! Our pet shipping business continues to expand and we can only achieve this through happy customers who recommend our services to others.
The good thing about shipping your dog to the USA from the Rabies free country or Rabies controlled Country such as the UK is that there surely is no quarantine requirement provided that your dog has been around the UK for 6 months or more. However, your puppy will need to have documented evidence to be vaccinated against rabies otherwise this may lead to entry delays as you is going to be asked to sign a Confinement Agreement (this basically says you will get your puppy vaccinated and then confine them for at the least 30 days after treatment). If you should be importing a puppy that’s too young (usually under 6 months of age) to own had the rabies vaccination then you will require a Confinement Agreement, see: USA CDC Dog Confinement Agreements for more details. Whilst the CDC (US authority on pet imports) does not require your dog to really have a certificate of overall health MOST AIRLINES DO REQUIRE THIS before they will alow your pet to board an aircraft.

Generally, all dogs must be imported or exported through among the

Exporting Pets Living in the United Kingdom

All dogs, cats and ferrets leaving the UK must certanly be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies (in that order) and wait 21 days before leaving the country. It’s also wise to ask your veterinarian for an EU Pet Passport if you want to go back to the UK.

If you should be planning to take your pet on a trip to a country with a top incidence of rabies, your veterinarian should administer a Blood Titer Test before you leave the united states if you would like to go back to the EU. You do not have to wait 90 days before traveling if your pet has an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in your pet passport.

You do not have to wait 3 months if your pet has an EU pet passport and its vaccination and blood test were done in the EU and recorded in the pet passport.

Pet Shipping Advice

All pet dogs and cats must be microchipped just before international travel, so ensuring this is performed will always be the first step in preparing your pets for travel. Another veterinary requirements vary immensely between every country, so please check the relevant page on our website or contact us for more in-depth information.

Most owners are extremely anxious about sending their pets on a journey, and this really is, obviously, totally understandable. However, 4 million domestic pets fly every year throughout the world and the risks of airline travel for them are exactly the same as a human of very same health status. The scare-mongering articles that may be located on the internet listing death and injury as common occurrences for air travel almost always occur once the rules for airline travel are flouted, such as animals being cramped into inappropriately sized travel kennels and not given the rigorous medical examinations which can be required ahead of airline journeys. The UK has strict welfare regulations governing international pet travel and animals would never be permitted to depart from any UK Airport in an unsuitable travel kennel or in ill health.

Pets should not happen to be arrive at any destination over a weekend or Bank Holiday because at most airports abroad there are no cargo handling arrangements during these days and/or Customs clearance where applicable. If they are allowed to reach at weekends it usually incurs yet another fees and possible delays in collecting your pet, therefore it is always far better send for a weekday arrival. There are exceptions to this so please contact our office for more information if this is something you require.

When taking your pet to a foreign country, please ensure they are only given water that is safe for humans to drink, we would strongly advise bottled water if you are in any doubt whatsoever. UK born animals will not have the natural immunity of native pets in your brand-new country, therefore it is imperative they are quite well protected with broad spectrum parasite treatments, to lessen the danger of serious illnesses transmitting to your pet. It can also be advisable to ensure that all of their routine vaccinations are updated because it’s prudent to provide them the maximum amount of disease immunity as possible.

Pets are more adaptable than they’re often given credit for, and with some common-sense precautions regarding changes in climate, natural dangers, standard of veterinary care and relevant laws in your new country, there is no reasons why pets cannot settle well into your life abroad together.
